Facts

The smallest unit of information
There are six different types of animals
Animals all have a life cycle
The life cycle of an animal depends on its type
Identifying an animal and its life cycle allows you to master that animal and return it to the zoo.

Concepts

Categories of things with a common name and critical attributes
What is a mammal? What is a reptile? What is an amphibian? What is a bird, fish, insect?
What is the life cycle of a mammal, bird fish, amphibian, reptile, insect?
How is the life cycle of an insect different than a mammal?
This game reiterates, reinforces the animal types, life cycles and differences between animals.

Principles

If-Then relationships between concepts
If an animal is a mammal then it has certain characteristics and a specific life cycle
If an animal is an insect, bird, fish, reptile or amphibian then it has certain characteristics and a specfic life cycle.
This game does allow for some different levels by adding in questions about tricky or more difficult or subtle differences between animals.

Procedures

Step by step actions in a series
Each animal has specific characteristics that make it fit into its category. An animal also has a certain life cycle in order for it to be classified as that type of animal
Ex: Mammal - warm blooded, has fur or hair, takes care of its babies, gives milk to its young, has live babies. Its life cycle includes - baby, youth, teenager, adult, reproducing adult, death
The game focuses on mastering an animal by answering a question about it and one about its life cycle.

Processes

Natural or routine sequences of events
An animal must be identified as a certain type, its life cycle identified in the right order.
This game focuses on identifying the correct animal type and its correct life cycle until all types have been identified.

Probabilities

Unpredictable happenings
Two different types of animals may have very similar life cycles. Some animals may seem to fit into two categories. Only two types of mammals do not have live babies and some animals in other categories besides mammals do take care of their young.
Some animal type and life cycle questions will be difficult as some animals overlap in characteristics and in life cycle.

Context

The backdrop for all the content
Animals live in certain types of habitats - these include the ocean, ponds, desert, forest, trees, and land.
The animal habitats are part of the board as well as the zoo. The animals have escaped the zoo and are loose in their habitats. Players must answer a question about the animals in order to be given a replica of that animal and retrun all six animal types to the zoo in order to win and be given animania status.

Vantage Points

The roles or points of view from which people look at and interact with this content
The game audience is second grade students who are learning about animal types and their life cycles in science.
Players take the role of animal research scientist, trying to figure out what type of animal is asked in the question, obtaining all six types and returning them to the zoo.
